Soheila Sokhanvari exhibition at The Heong Gallery features Star designed with Jflemay
A solo exhibition by artist Soheila Sokhanvari at The Heong Gallery in Cambridge features a 1-metre Star sculpture designed as a collaborative art piece with Jflemay Architecture and Design and commissioned by Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery.
The exhibition entitled “We Could Be Heroes…” is open from 5 October 2023 to 4 February 2024. It follows on Sokhanvari’s major exhibition “Rebel Rebel” at the Barbican Curve gallery in London, 2022 – 2023.
The Heong Gallery exhibition comprises 14 paintings, 19 crude oil paintings, a diptych, a triptych and three screen-prints, all by the artist; and the Star designed by the artist with architect Jflemay. The star glows centre-piece with an internal video projection of actresses of pre-revolutionary Iran, while also reflecting Sokhanvari’s beautiful, intricate portraits of Iranian women in the gallery.
At the end of the space opposite the Star, the diptych “Love Atomic (Portrait of Gooogoosh)” develops the theme of reflection and inversion. In this work, the artist painted the popular singer and actress in inverted colours, like a film negative, “to suggest … darkness and light in Googoosh’s public and personal lives”.
