Completion of the Florida Avenue art galleries in West Palm Beach and opening of Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery

The six Florida Avenue art galleries in West Palm Beach, designed by Jflemay Architecture and Design along with Song and Associates, are completed in October 2023. Among these, Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery at 2414 Florida Avenue opens for business on Saturday 28 October with an exhibition of paintings by the British artist Sara Berman.

The galleries are situated at 2404-2414 Florida Avenue in the leafy neighbourhood of Sunshine Park, 800 metres south of the Norton Museum of Art. The building was formerly a warehouse and is located along the Florida East Coast Railroad which carries the Brightline inter-city trains.

The southernmost gallery, Kristin Hjellegjerde, approached us in November 2021 to design their entrance. Our scope gradually grew to designing their interior and the building’s exterior along with the Florida-based architects Song and Associates. Jflemay acted as designer on this project, providing 2d and 3d design, visualisation and virtual reality services to the owner Bruce Gendelman and the tenant Kristin Hjellegjerde.

In autumn 2023, the six galleries are Bruce Gendelman (2404), New Wave (2406), ARCA (2408), Casa Branca (2410), TW Fine Art (2412) and Kristin Hjellegjerde (2414). A further segment of the warehouse will house a private art collection designed by Huum (Hughes Umban Howar) Architects.

The Norwegian gallerist Kristin Hjellegjerde opened 2414 Florida Avenue — her first gallery in America — on Friday 27 October with a dinner in the space. The guests of honour were Heidi Olufsen, consul general of the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York; Gilbert Maurer, director and former COO of Hearst Communications; the building owners Bruce Gendelman and Spencer Partrich; and the artist Sara Berman.

In between courses, the guests enjoyed arias sung by the Cuban soprano Laura León, a rising star with the Florida Grand Opera, in honour of the Palm Beach Opera who formerly occupied the warehouse for storage. Sara Berman presented her solo exhibition entitled “No Visible Means of Support” on public display until 2 December 2023.
